Bury v Darlington
Story by Kevin Luff - 15th January 2007
Having returned to winning ways Darlington head to Bury tomorrow night looking to claim another three points. Dave Penney's side stopped the rot with a 3-1 home win over Peterborough United at the Arena on Saturday. The victory over the Posh ended a run of eight games without a win. Penney feels the mood in the camp following the result has changed for the better.
Quakers could well name an unchanged side for their trip to Gigg Lane which was called off at the first attempt due to a waterlogged pitch. Micky Cummins will be absent thanks to an ankle problem whilst Martin Smith continues to be sidelined. Penney has given little away in the build up to the game but admits he would like to have a few faces back at his disposal but on the back a positive result will be more than happy to go again with what he has.
"I think the determination is back," said Penney. "They came in for training with a smile on their faces and we don't have to pick them up. They are there having a bit of a laugh and a joke which is sometimes not there when you get beat. We haven't had to pick them up at all today. We'd like a few people back. We are missing Patrick Collins, Micky Cummins and Martin Smith through injury but we'll just go with what we've got."
Results in recent weeks at Gigg Lane have been few for the hosts. Bury have won only two of their last five league fixtures at home but came from behind against strugglers Torquay United to claim a point. Andy Bishop's penalty in injury time gave the Shakers a share of the spoils. He is one of the players Penney has identified as a threat for his Darlington side.
"I've watched them twice now and they are a good passing side but their better results have been away from home. The lad Bishop is a good player, he scores goals and Hurst has a bit of pace. If you look at the two forwards they are the main threats," said Penney when speaking to the press earlier today.
Bury will make at least one change with keeper Alan Fettis suspended. The Bury shot stopper was shown a red card against Torquay over the weekend and is has forced the Shakers to draft in Andy Warrington. The thirty-year old will stay with Bury until the end of the season. This is Warrington's second spell at Gigg lane after he first arrived in December on loan from Doncaster. Warrington played just two games for the Shakers before being forced to leave the field early in the 2-1 defeat at Gigg Lane to Walsall with a thigh injury. Striker Bishop took over from the keeper in goal for the last five minutes of the game.
Bury manager Chris Casper like his opposite number at Darlington will be looking for his side to make the most of their result at Torquay over the weekend. Having found themselves 2-0 down against the bottom of the table side Bury did well to get a point.
"For the travelling fans, it must have felt like a win, we all saw their reaction when we levelled it, and we could have even nicked one right at the end to win the game," said Casper. "We have to capitalise on this result now and build on this; it is a big result for us.It was important that we didn't get beat today. We have two home games now and two massive games, we have no injuries but obviously we have to look at the goal keeper situation because Alan wont be able to play on Tuesday."
