Wrexham v Darlington
Darlington head to Wrexham as they seek to build upon their second half performance against Cheltenham Town the previous weekend. Quakers are boosted by the return of defender David Duke for this encounter. Manager Dave Hodgson has already confirmed the former Swindon man will have an involvement at the Racecourse Ground and this will be welcomed by Quakers fans after seeing the player start to turn in some positive performance before his injury against Bury two weeks ago.
Whilst the 3-1 victory over Cheltenham helped maters on the pitch Quakers are still not out of the woods yet. Whilst Wrexham will offer a stern challenge on Saturday afternoon Quakers generally do well against the 'better' sides the division has to offer however even manager Dave Hodgson can't call this latest encounter.
"That's a fair comment we tend to deal with the better or supposedly better sides better. Cheltenham in all due respect were looked upon as being one of those better sides and when you look at the game you see they didn't get anywhere near hurting us. It gives you an indication that if we get our house in order we could be a real force in this league," said Hodgson. "If you ask me what we are going to do tomorrow I'll give you an honest answer and say I really don't know. But as you say Wrexham are a good side, they've got five wins, five draws and five defeats. So there is nothing more than its either going to be six wins, six draws or six defeats. That we can guarantee."
Dave Hodgson is keen to establish a more consistent side. Early into the campaign this was the intention and Quakers achieved this until a dip in performances forced a reshuffle. Injuries have failed to help things in that department but the manager is keen to try however he admits it is difficult once he attempts to factor in the return of Carlos Logan and Phil Stamp.
"I am going to go back to my beliefs to be honest. I am hoping we can fire. I want to see a settled eleven but sooner or later Stampy it going to be knocking on the door and so is Carlos Logan so you tend to take that into consideration with what type of line up you can put out with those in it. I'm going to go back to my beliefs tomorrow and I want us to be positive right from the off and be forceful down both sides as well as going through the middle and I am going to go and try and win the game."
Wrexham are enjoying a decent home record at the Racecourse ground so far this season. Five home wins, one draw and just one defeat on home soil see the Dragons nicely positioned in the league table just two points off the play-off pace setters. Wrexham however will no doubt have to improve away from home - they have so far failed to win away from their home fans.
Quakers' last two visits to the Racecourse ground have been encouraging affairs. The 2002/03 season saw Darlington make two trips to Wrexham - the first for an FA Cup tie which Darlington bucked the odds and came away with a fine 2-0 win in November 2002. The league game in early 2003 wasn't quite as profitable but a welcome point none the less thanks to a goalless draw.
Wrexham have worries for the game in the shape of injuries to Pejic, Whitley, Ugarte and Bennett. Paul Warhurst looks likely to miss out after picking up a groin strain following Tuesday night's trip to Peterborough United and Robbie Foy picking up a dead leg after playing against Tranmere Rovers Reserves on Wednesday evening. For all Darlington fans travelling down to the game have a safe trip and remember Quakers World if you are unable to attend.
