DARLINGTON V LINCOLN CITY
Quakers sit in pole position in the Coca-Cola League Two table and will be looking to continue their excellent start to the campaign with a victory over Lincoln City. With only two goals conceded in five league games Dave Penney's side will be looking to get another shut out at the back as well.
The defensive ability of the side at present is obvious but it was underlined in the game at Rotherham United. Quakers gave little away and the Darlington boss admitted he feels more comfortable with his current defensive options than he did before.
"We never had that last season and I never felt comfortable sat on the bench and players in front of the defence never felt comfortable," said Penney. "You get a little bit more freedom when you know that there are people behind you who can organise things. David Stockdale is also benefiting and a culmination of all those things is enabling us to keep clean sheets. It is pleasing but scoring nine goals shows we can do it at the other end as well."
Lincoln City have endured an indifferent start to their campaign. Back to back wins over Mansfield Town and Accrington Stanley were followed up by defeats to Dagenham and Bradford City last Friday evening. The Imps track record of reaching the play-offs creates expectation and whilst John Schofield's team have started campaigns in better shape than the current one they have experience and some exciting youngsters so it would be a surprise not to see them mount some kind of challenge.
Schofield has a selection headache ahead of this encounter. Adie Moses comes into contention whilst performances from Ollie Ryan, Owain Warlow and Ben Wright during City's midweek reserve outing will also pose issues for the manager. Penney meanwhile has hinted that he may make a small tweak to his side but appears set to leave his team largely untouched for the game against Lincoln City.
"When you are winning things it is easy enough. I am one of those that if you have the shirt and you are doing well and the team is winning you stay in. The hardest bit at times is picking the bench and trying to select the best players who can effect things if you have problems in certain areas," said the Darlington boss. "Players understand that and they just have to get on with it. Sometimes there may be a case that you have to change one or two positions because of the personnel the other team have. Saturday may be one of those days. Generally though it is a case of going with what you have because they are doing well."
Darlington have few concerns going into this game. Clark Keltie played in the reserve fixture during midweek but is unlikely to be in contention whilst Xavier Barrau, a recent recruit, may have to wait a bit longer. Winger Martin Smith remains the only player sidelined through injury. Quakers' match kicks off at 3pm.
