BETTER TEAM WON - BUTCHER
Brentford boss Terry Butcher admitted that his side's home form was not good enough following Quakers' 2-0 win at Griffin Park but took nothing away from the visitors. Darlington took the lead through a Clark Keltie penalty and then doubled their advantage before the break with a Tommy Wright header to complete another frustrating home game for the Bees supporters.
Brentford had a few chances in the second half but Darlington always looked likely to get the win. The result means that Butcher's side have now won just two games at home all season. Having played well against Luton Town in the FA Cup the former England player was at a loss to explain why his side are so inconsistent.
"We've had too many defeats at home now," he said. "We want to entertain our fans and we want to win for them. I think we possibly try to play in a different way at home. Perhaps we feel we have got to entertain and we have got to produce football which we feel is right for the fans. The fans want to see winning football and I don't think they are bothered as long as we get a win. To be honest we are not bothered how we win either."
"Our away form is better than our home form and that is hugely disappointing. We wanted to make Griffin Park a fortress this year but it is not. I am the one who will accept total blame for that but we have to work at it together. I am confident that we can do that and get it right. It just blows your mind because we have played some great football in two of the last four games and in the other two we've played some awful football. It is very much Jekyll and Hyde."
Following their relegation from Coca-Cola League One last season Brentford were expected to challenge for promotion but instead they find themselves below mid-table. Despite his concerns over his side Butcher took nothing away from the visitors who he said deserved their three points.
"I am not going to gloss over everything and say we were unlucky because the better team won the match. It was hugely disappointing that even when we did get a few chances at the end that we didn't put one in the back of the net. At least score one goal and it lifts everyone else. That's what we said at half time but it wasn't to be."
"We could still be playing now and not have scored. It just wasn't going to be our afternoon. It is so frustrating for our fans at home because we have been poor. We've won two games at home all season, lost four and that isn't good enough," continued Butcher.
