Thoughts of revenge did not run through Darlington manager Dave Penney's mind as his team beat Stockport County 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. Quakers were beaten 5-2 at Edgeley Park and then 5-0 at home on the final day of the previous season. This time it was a very different story as Darlington scored twice in a comfortable first half before scoring twice more in the final ten minutes to seal the result.

"As long as we won the game thoughts of revenge didn't enter my mind. I was disappointed with the two results we had against them last season and it does show the big turn around we've had from getting beat by five to winning by four," said Penney.

"We took our chances and we didn't sit back on a 2-0 lead at half time. We told them to go at it because the third goal was important. If they got it then we could have been hanging on a little bit. We made a point of not sitting back and going for it instead."

Darlington forward Tommy Wright scored two of the goals as he bought his total for the season to seven. The first goal was a lesson for any young player on why to chase the ball and put defenders and goalkeepers under pressure.

"There was a mix up between the keeper and the centre half. In the end it was a tap in for Tommy Wright. But he had to make that gamble and he had to make that run and close people down otherwise it would have just been a free header for their defender," said Penney. "We empathised the work rate. We said whoever is up there that we have to squeeze from the front and pressure people. That is what we did and that is why we got the goal."

Stockport enjoyed a better second half but Quakers soaked up the pressure with Alan White and skipper Steve Foster again putting in superb displays at the back. Goalkeeper Andy Oakes also enjoyed another good outing in goal pulling off a tremendous double save at the end of the game.

"I wasn't worried about what they were doing I was worried about what we were doing," admitted Penney. "We were not holding it up at the front. The ball didn't stick like it did in the first half and it doesn't give you a base to get out. What we are doing well if that is happening is defending. Last year I am sure we would have conceded a goal, this year we can soak that pressure up."

"Defensively we have been excellent. At centre half we have Ian Miller chomping on the bit to get in there. Foster and White have been excellent and Oakes has come back and had his best game so far in my opinion. There are lots of positives but there is still things to work on, like getting a hold of the ball up front, getting out and brining people into play."
